Rebar Detailing (IntelCAD-RC)

IntelCAD-RC has been developed under the direction of Alex Januszkiewicz,
former president and leading programmer at IntelCAD Systems. He was also the author of a custom rebar
detailing system for the famous Hibernia Gravity Base
Structure project, the first offshore oil platform that was designed to withstand
the impact of icebergs and 30 meter waves, in the most severe conditions of the North Atlantic,
300 km of the coast of Newfoundland. The implementation of an automated rebar detailing
system with a project-wide rebar database increased design and drafting speed tremendously
and became one of the key elements in the success of the slipform construction method employed
on this project. (Interesting pictures from Hibernia operating today can be found by
following this link).
The rapid growth in popularity of IntelcadRC in Europe started in the end of 1995, when
Laurent Morisseau, Director of IntelCAD Systems France, introduced the software to Europe
Etudes Gecti (EEG), a major French consulting company. Since then the software has
been successfully used for RC detailing drawings and bar lists on number of projects in
Europe and Asia, greatly speeding up the production and minimizing mistakes. EEG,
with more then fifty CADD stations currently running our RC detailing program in Paris,
Toulouse, Strasbourg, and Rennes offices, is leaving any reinforcement detailing
competition far behind. It cooperates closely with IntelCAD Systems with
the intention to make
IntelcadRC the world's leading CADD reinforced concrete detailing software.
Sample Project
Computer generated 3D images of Vasco Da Gama,
an 18 km long bridge in Lisbon, Portugal, designed by EEG for the Universal Exhibition. One of
the outstanding European projects of the present day. All concrete reinforcement
drawings (160000 tonnes of reinforcing steel) were created with our program, the
reinforcement
ordered and produced using a rebar schedule generated by IntelcadRC.

Features
IntelCAD-RC is a system that, within AutoCAD, helps to generate high quality,
reinforcement detailing drawings. As the drawing is finished, a rebar list is
automatically generated. This barlist reflects precisely the geometry of rebars and
the quantities of a particular barmark used in a drawing. They can be used directly for
ordering rebars from the rebar shop.
The four major components of the system are:
- Bar drawing and editing
- Bar marking
- Rebar list generation
- Customization tools
This reinforcement detailing system is totally customizable in terms of shape code, bar
diameters, steel grades, symbology, barlist layout, etc. It can be adjusted to any
standard used on a particular project. It can be used on a project of any size or
complexity, and is particularly well suited for concrete megaprojects such as a nuclear power
plant, a water dam, an offshore oil rig concrete gravity base structure (GBS), etc. It is
possible to maintain multiple configurations allowing for parallel use of different
standards for different projects.
Customization can be easily performed by a user's CADD support personnel or, for a small
fee, by IntelCAD Systems. Free customization can be included as a part of
the initial
purchase arrangements.
Through its unique shape recognition system, IntelcadRC can recognize shapes that are
within prescribed tolerances and organize all rebars used in a project into a database,
where each barmark designates a unique bar geometry. Wherever this bar occurs in a
project, it is guaranteed to receive the same barmark. It is up to project management to
decide if the project should be organized by having a rebar database per drawing or
a common database for portions on the construction or the whole project. A properly
organized project can dramatically decrease the number of different shapes that have to be
bent in a rebar shop and allow for better planning of the rebar delivery
schedule - this
issue is especially critical in slipform construction methods.
IntelcadRC is programmed using ObjectARX and Microsoft VC++. This accounts for
very fast processing, including rebar database searches (eg. near instantaneous matching
of similar bar geometry out of thousands of bars in a project database).
One of the unique tools of IntelcadRC is a rebar database browser. It allows for viewing
of the properties of every bar used on the project, editing of the rebar data, and importing
of
rebars into the current drawing.
The rebar schedule generated from the drawing can be summated by the system with other
barlists in order to produce summation schedules of the whole construction parts or even
the whole project.
The system allows for the use of special types of bars such as t-bar, and connections
such as coupled connections. It's up to the user to define the type and graphical symbols for
T-plate, coupler, thread, etc.
IntelCAD-RC is a simple and intuitive system from the user's perspective. It was
designed by the users of AutoCAD and top CAD programmers - personnel who have been totally
immersed in AutoCAD since its early days in 1985. All commands are designed to have
a similar look and feel as AutoCAD commands. This program does not restrict the use
of any AutoCAD command (as opposed to some RC-detailing packages, where using STRETCH or
COPY on a rebar will mess up database links). You are free to use all of
your
preferred CAD drafting methods. When you tag the bars, their geometry, steel grade,
etc. are saved in a database and given a barmark number, and a rebar schedule can be generated
next. While the barlist is generated, multiple consistency checks are being
performed to make sure that schedule records reflect the geometry shown on a drawing. Any
inconsistencies can be fixed by updating the barmark. The schedule may include sketches
of all or just certain shape bars.
Once the reinforcing bars are drawn, they can be modified by special IntelCAD-RC
commands (like ADD HOOK, ADD COUPLER, REMOVE END DEVICE) or by regular AutoCAD commands
like BREAK, STRETCH, MOVE, etc. The regenerated schedule will reflect all the modifications
done to the rebars.
Do what your competition is doing right now: automate your reinforced concrete
detailing and barlist generation.
